Storing blankets efficiently – and attractively – can be a challenge. From throw blankets to wool and weighted ones, they tend to pile up faster than we realize. “With so many types of wonderful blankets to collect, you can run out of creative storage ideas,” says organizing pro Marty Basher of Modular wardrobes. Add bulky quilts, limited wardrobe space and the desire to keep things both functional and stylish, and smart storage becomes a must.
For wool blankets, pest control and airflow are key. “Wool blankets are a little more pretentious than other synthetic blankets,” says Maegan Bucur, editor-in-chief of The rhythm of the home. “It’s best to dry wool blankets completely before storing them.” She recommends storage solutions such as resealable plastic containers or wicker baskets, which “keep them dry and well-ventilated”.
Down blankets need a little more structure. “These bulky items can take up space and can also collect dust,” says the designer Lisa Galano. “I think it’s really important to protect your heavier blankets and duvets when they’re not in heavy rotation by first washing them thoroughly and then storing them in an airtight, recyclable container or bag with a zipper or tight seal.” To keep them fresh, she adds, “I also like to throw in a Meyer’s dish towel or two when I’m storing linens.”
Small spaces require creativity. “The secret to storing blankets when space is tight is to utilize dead space next to the ceiling,” says Stefan Bucur, founder of Rhythm of the Home. “Install floating shelves, preferably ones that come with built-in hangers, on the walls near the ceiling to tenfold the room’s storage capacity.”
And for options that serve as decor, decorators Beth Diana Smith swear by storage that works hard and looks good. “I like to keep blankets in places that are easy to access, have a dual purpose, or double as hidden storage,” she says. “I love using trunks and oversized wicker or seaweed baskets with lids. Baskets are great for hidden storage and can be beautiful decor pieces!”
From baskets to trunks to under-beds, these expert-approved ideas make it easy to keep your space cozy, clean and de-cluttered.
