Friends, citizens, fellows of marmalade, lend me your ears! Something very interesting has happened in the campaign for upcoming 2025 movie we have known to be called Paddington in Peru. The brand new threequel involving the Peruvian bear still looks a lot of fun in its recently released US teaser, and while there isn’t much new footage, one particularly awkward absence has been noticed by fans. It has led to a stream of rather hysterical and unsurprisingly polite comments.
How Paddington in Peru’s US teaser differs from the UK version
As you can see above, the US teaser released by Sony only seems to have the video listed as “Paddington – Official Trailer.” Compounding this strange chain of events is the lack of a mention of the title in both the video and the official graphic that appears on the screen at the end.
The good news is that Paddington 3’s Release date January 2025 is still in play, as it is included in the last slide. So for now we shouldn’t worry about any delays separating the world any longer from Ben Whishaw’s gentle bear and the search for his ancestral home.
That said, the complete absence of a title is the ultimate head scratcher, especially when the video could have been tagged with something as innocuous as Paddington 3. StudioCanal’s official US teaser does indeed have the full title listed, although it is missing from the film. It’s a scenario as sticky as a marmalade sandwich covered in marshmallow fluff, inspiring these well-acted reactions in the comments section of the official trailer on YouTube:
- “Ah yes, Paddington, the sequel to Paddington 2.” – @midnightcrow2092
- “Uhhh………..did they forget the title of their own movie?” – @samil679
- “Maybe they had some licensing issues with Peru” – @5MadMovieMakers
- “Finally a prequel to Paddington 2! I always wondered why they started with 2 instead of 1” – @IslaNinja
- “Oh ok I’m dying for this remake! (Someone get fired)” – @CrazyManhog
Although I highly doubt anyone would lose their job over this Paddington in Peru debacle, it raises an interesting question. One that’s even more interesting to consider as we head towards the November 8 release of this picture in the UK, with the title still seemingly intact in creator Michael Bond’s home country.
Is Paddington 3 Heading For A Surprising Name Change?
It could be said that director Dougal Wilson’s contribution to this beloved series has already seen quite a few changes in its lifetime thanks to Paddington 3’s throw see the role of Mrs Brown change hands from Sally Hawkins to Emily Mortimer. But the differences in these trailers feel like it suggests that some branches of international marketing haven’t settled on a replacement.
You can watch this on the Sony Pictures YouTube channels in Malaysia and Canada, which are branded just like the US version. Which is odd, given that Sony Pictures India has it Paddington in Peru included in its label. For comparison, take a look at the previously released UK version of Paddington in Peru teaser:
What’s also interesting is that this fresh look at the project is completely absent from any previous films that showcase the Brown family’s inclusion in the adventure. It also feels like a sign of different promotional strategies between StudioCanal and its international distributor, which only makes concerns about a name change all the more valid. Either that or comparisons with Triangle of grief is about to become more worrying than we thought.
Admittedly, we may have to wait until Paddington in Peru opens in the UK on November 8th before we see any sort of closure on this issue. If the film doesn’t perform as its studio guardians would like, there’s a potential that the name will change for another slice of the worldwide sandwich for its January 17th debut.
Let’s hope the fandom remains as cuttingly kind and polite as they were above, while we wait for further updates. The occasion may be best to revisit the first Paddington movie (the actually holds that title), as it is currently available to those with one Netflix subscription or a Tubi account.
