Lyor CohenThe former President of Def Jam recordings, has issued an open letter directed to Kanye West.
Cohen is currently Youtube’s global music director and CEO of 300 Entertainment. West released his debut album, “The College Dropout”, via Roc-A-Fella and Def Jam 2004, the same year that Cohen left its position as president of the Warner Music Group label.
In his letter, Cohen asks west to be “more sensitive to the pain that your words affect Jewish societies and everyone who resists hatred.” This follows West’s Ongoing Tirade Against Jewish people-this includes everything from the sale of a t-shirt with a Swastika on it (and a Super Bowl ad for the online store), to West who calls himself a Nazi via X.
Although West was dropped From his talent agency (33 & West) on Tuesday morning, his music and video content is still available to stream on platforms including Youtube.
Read Cohen’s letter below:
Dear Kanye,
I am deeply disappointed and worried about your latest action involving the use of Nazi symbols and anti -Semitic rhetoric. Your words and actions are not only offensive but trigger for all decent people who recognize the horror and millions of the Holocaust.
With anti -Semitism, your voice and influence have significant responsibility. I urge you to be more sensitive to the pain that your words affect Jewish societies and everyone who resists hatred.
Your talent and range can be used to heal and inspire, to bridge gaps and promote understanding. Instead, you have chosen a road that sow disagreement and maintains harmful stereotypes.
The Jewish and black experiences share a rich history of collaboration and mutual support, especially in the music industry. From the early days of jazz and blues to the groundbreaking work in Motown and then our communities have enriched each other through music and culture.
I urge you to reflect on this shared legacy and use your platform to build on the love and understanding that has always existed between our communities.
Sincerely,
Leyor
