“Emilia Perez” Oscar -Nominated Karla Sofia Gascon will attend the Academy Awards on Sunday after her award campaign was reflected year old racist tweets resumed by a freelance journalist.
Gascon has been low since the tweets were exposed, removed their social media accounts and declined to participate in BAftas and the SAG prizes among other awards ceremonies that fill the lead up to Oscar Sunday. Other “Emilia Perez” nominated, including director Jacques Audiard and co -star Zoe Saldana, has distanced himself from Gascon over her comments.
“I decided, for the movie, for Jacques, for the role, for the incredible crew that deserves it, for the beautiful adventure we all had together, to let the work talk to itself, hope my silence will let the movie be appreciated for What it is, a beautiful ode to love and difference. I apologize to everyone who has been injured on the road, ”Gascón wrote on Instagram earlier this month.
Gascon is the first open trans actor nominated for an Oscar. In “Emilia Perez”, she plays the former drug lord who calls on a lawyer, played by balances, to help her fake her death and transition to escape her life in crime. Years later, she tries to make changes by establishing a non -governmental organization that helps families by those killed by drug cartels to find closing.
Gascon’s plans to participate in Oscars were first reported by page six.
