I have always been a “make you ready” girl. Although I only have 20 minutes before a night out, I will make a small concealer, a quick layer of mascara and a fun lip combo. Getting ready is half the fun to leave the house for me. I am a beauty editor.
So when I saw one Tiktok video from Kara best When I talked about her plan to go on a first date with zero makeup and then carry more and more on the following date, I thought it sounded like a fun experiment. Obviously, it also made 1.9 million other people who liked the post. This led to a whole conversation about beauty standards and first impressions. Soon, Other creators Be chimping with their own experiences.
I have always treated dating as my own little social experiment. Each date feels like a chance to meet someone new and test another beauty or fashion look. (That’s why I was so game to wear Doechii’s face tape for a night out.) So I thought, why not try this trend too? A few days later I landed a date on a dating app (hold for applause) and decided it would be my first attempt.
I will admit that I was standing over my concealer in solid 10 seconds before I decided to leave it behind.

Honestly? The date went well. More than good, actually – I loved it a little. And my date didn’t even notice (no surprise there, right?). There was something liberating about not worrying about whether my eyeliner smeared or if I had to reapply lipstick after drinks. I especially loved to skip mascara, which usually bothers me because of my contacts, so it was nice to sit opposite someone and feel completely clean and distraction -free.
If we go out again, I plan to wear a little more (as the Tiktok trend requires) – maybe a little redness, concealer and contour just to keep the game going. But at the moment I’m just waiting to see if he text me back.
