This year’s LACMA Art+Film gala on Saturday night proved once again that it is one of Los Angeles’ star-studded events of the year.
Elle Fanning, Kaia Gerber and mother Cindy Crawford, Lorde, Angela Bassett, Cynthia Erivo, Samara Weaving, Benito Skinner, Tessa Thompson, Emma Roberts and Paris Hilton were among the evening’s best dressed.
The 2025 fundraiser honored “Sinners” filmmaker Ryan Coogler and visual artist Mary Corse. The evening ended with a performance by Doja Cat.
Coogler, presented with his honor by Bassett, gave an emotional speech about his friendship with the late social rights activist Michael Latt, who was shot and killed during a home burglary in 2023. Latt was the son of Sundance Institute Feature Film Program founder Michelle Satter and producer David Latt. “Michael changed the world,” Coogler said.
Coogler also recalled that he became a screenwriter while in college. “I never thought of myself as an artist. I was a football player before anything and I was kind of recommended to write scripts on a whim when I was a student at USC on a football scholarship,” he said.
The “Sinners” filmmaker said he first felt at his “weakest” and “lowest” when he came to Los Angeles because he missed his community in his hometown of Oakland, California. But now, he said, “this place became a second home to me. I made memories here. I made friends here.”
Presented in partnership with Gucci and chaired by “One Battle After Another” star Leonardo DiCaprio and Eva Chow, LACMA Art+Film supports the art institution’s initiative to make film more central to the museum’s curatorial program, while funding its broader mission. This includes exhibitions, acquisitions and educational programs, in addition to screenings that explore the intersection of art and film.
