The horror genre has flourished for a number of years, with the current renaissance bringing some of the best horror movies back to cinemas with new sequels. But there have also been plenty of outstanding original concepts, including upcoming horror movie The subject. The first disturbing trailer for Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley’s anticipated horror film is here, and Dennis Quaids smiling weirdo is already a scene-stealer.
The subject received the longest ovation from Cannes this year, which is saying something given how gruesome the body horror sequences are expected to be. The film has also been hyped for Demi Moore’s nudityalthough the first trailer made it clear that these sequences would be anything but sexy. And we didn’t even get much of the wild gore to come once it gets a wide theatrical release. Although Dennis Quaid’s brief, smiling appearance is definitely one to remember as well.
This first trailer is cut with some of the acclaimed critics’ responses from The subjects early showings. In it, we see Demi Moore’s protagonist Elisabeth Sparkle, who is the star of an aerobics show who struggles after being fired when she turned 50. It is then that a mysterious laboratory offers her the “substance” that will turn her into a younger and more beautiful version by itself… but there’s a twist.
Qualley plays this younger version named Sue, where the two characters are forced to share a creature and seemingly turn into each other in a bloody mansion. Not much of this action was shown in the first trailer, although we did see bits of the two seemingly tussling over control of their bodies.
Dennis Quaid plays Elisabeth’s boss Harvey, who is seemingly the man who decides she’s too old for his job. He looks like a total creep in this first film, asking either Elisabeth or Sue to smile at him and a crew of grinning men. And I have to assume he won’t make it out of the upcoming horror movie alive.
While Ghost the actress has received attention before the premiere of the film because she was naked in the film, Demi Moore has taken exuberance with this storyclaims that the film is so much more than that. And from the criticism shown in this teaser, she’s not wrong.
It is not the first time that Demi Moore’s appearance has been the subject of her work. She created countless headlines for her work in Charlie’s Angels: Full throttlewhich included a steamy bikini scene. And it will be fascinating to see if/how she uses this life experience for her performance in the horror film.
The subject is currently expected to hit theaters on September 20. For now, check out 2025 movie release date.
