The editor’s note: The following posts contain spoilers for “The night agent“Season 2.
“The night agent” Season 2 ends with Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) in an uncertain position – but this is not the first time he (or his family) has been there.
Shawn Ryan’s Netflix Series released another ten episodes on January 23, with Season 3 already confirmed. This announcement was enough to guarantee an open end, but Season 2 still wraps up its central arches quite neatly (that’s no “Squid Game 2” Cliffhanger, anyway). But how did it weave exactly a formidable dictator, intelligence broker, Iranian intelligence and a presidential candidate? We break down everything below.
The attack
The nerve-racing final opens with Peter and everyone else who converges at the UN, who is evacuated to assess a threat in the plumbing system. Very few people know that the threat is KX, the chemical agent that steps (Luciane Buchanon) helped Dr. Cole (Jay Karnes) to produce in a lab for Markus (Michael Malarke) and his team. The pursuit sequences are easy to some of the most tense in this show’s history, with damaged on all sides like Markus absconds with a capsule, holds Sloane (Elise Kibler) as hostage and eventually killed.
It is always refreshing to see Rose get more to do at this show. Season 2, section 10 gives payment for their work in facial recognition – both digital and analog – and to use the chemistry knowledge that Dr. Cole assigns to save thousands of lives. Throughout season 2, she became more and more physically involved in the action, even when Peter’s instincts around her became more protective.
Injured
There is a lot of blood casting this season, from Alice (Brittany Snow) in the cold open to Tomás (Rob Heaps) at the end of section 9, but one of the most influencing deaths was Farhad (Kiarash Amani), Noor’s (Arienne Mandi) brother as would evacuate Iran on its orders. It happened in the middle of the season, but stands out because of Marjan Neshat’s performance as his mother, who witnesses the whole thing. From there, reality slowly puts in and fears permeates the show through other characters until Noor finds out. Her story is mostly elements of the final, but there is a scene with mom and daughter who learns that they have been granted asylum and accept a seemingly minor check for their problems.
“This is what America thinks my brother was worth?” Noor asks in distrust.
Depending on when Season 3 picks up and based on what we saw by Governor Hagans (Ward Horton) supporters, maybe Noor does not think that America is as safe and welcoming as she hoped – and without her brother, some hope for a normal and sad life Died with him. As painful as this whole bow is, it’s worth noting that “The Night Agent” is a show that started with Rose losing its loved ones and anchored in the fact that people are above all worth protecting.
The deal
This happened in section 9, but it is crucial for the finals and future seasons; Peter released Solomon (Berto Colon) in exchange for a meeting with his manager Jacob (Louis Herthum) and a deal. Peter went Awol for the second time this season to secure these files, and although Solomon did not last long, he was free at the time of his death and threatened Catherine (Amanda Weaver).
In addition to moral gymnastics to do business with Jacob, these actions betray the strength of Peter’s feelings for Rose – and how vulnerable these feelings make him. He is enough enough to end the assignment and save everyone, and also to turn in, but not without having a serious conversation with Rose. As long as he is a night ageant, she will never be sure, no matter how much she does not care and wants to stay by his side. (Someone else feels like seeing “Spider-Man 2?”)
Secret Service agent Chelsea Arrington (Fola Evans Acingbola) appears in the final, as part of the details that protect governor Hagan (Ward Horton). Hagan is entirely in Cahoots with Jacob, “Information Broker”, and uses his knowledge to move on in his presidential campaign. The service that Peter did to Jacob was to secure audio files that link Hagan’s opponent to Viktor Bala (Dikran Tulaine) and Foxglove – and forced him to recall his candidacy to president and anything but guarantee Hagan’s victory. Catherine explains all this with clarity; Peter’s actions will have enormous consequences for the country.
The section ends with Peter making something too familiar: Waiting at a phone. Catherine information about being a double agent (like his father!); All he has to do is answer Jacob’s conversation – and no one knows better than Peter Sutherland how much a person’s life can change from a phone call.
