Cate Blanchett thinks Oscars would be much more fun if they were not on TV.
Talk to Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang on their Bodybuilders Podcast, Blanchett was surprised to hear that lip readers analyze every TV moment.
The thinking line started when Blanchett lamented the pervasive presence of phones and noted: “There are so few spaces that you can go now, where you are private. That was what I loved in the end of the 80s (where) to all the dance parties in Sydney for Mardi Gras. People were only there. did. ”
Rogers and Yang recommended a club in New York City called “Basement”, which prohibits mobile phones inside, a policy that Blanchett said is “Such a relief. I think people are deeply relieved when they feel they don’t have to record (something). I can only tell people. Or not.”
“But now it feels like the gap between that type of event, the ideal, is broadened from what is very common now on, as well as a price exhibition where you have lip readers, you are photographed-“
“Lip reader?” Blanchett asked incredibly. The hosts explained that on platforms such as Tiktok, for example, people will be pushing over videos of two celebrities who are seen talking at a price show to try to find out what they say.
“And it looks like it might be exactly what they say, in a way that is a bit … odd,” Rogers said.
“It’s really, what? I mean, do something. Learn you ikebana or something, like a skill that is actually beautiful,” Blachett said.
Yang added that things like lip reading make events feel more “treacherous” and blachet agreed.
“I mean, I say, I know it’s blasphemy, go back to the day when it was not broadcast,” she suggested. “Take it back and just have an amazing party where people can just let go.”
She added that the entertainment industry is at a “pivot point, and therefore we have to gather and celebrate what we do, without having to have anyone public.”
“I mean, fashion is good and all that,” Blanchett said. “We will find out in the end that won or who did not win. But it would be so nice that it happened behind closed doors. (It would be) Absolutely a completely different evening.”
Blanchett was on the show to promote its new film, “Black Bag,” which costs Michael Fassbender and was directed by Steven Soderbergh.
