Sometimes even something similar TV schedule 2024 need a silent guardian, a watchful protector… and dare I say, a dark knight? But never mind that the Nolanverse of Batman movies have returned, like Prime Video’s original series Batman: The Caped Crusader seems to throw us back into another world. The fact is that of best animated series through the ages, and the rogue roster is so stacked, I must now ask a rather important question about the room.
Gotham’s finest villains are on hand for Batman: Caped Crusader
The first trailer shows an extensive look at this upcoming DC TV show is chock full of the bad guys that roam the streets of Gotham City. Everyone from The Penguin to Two-Face, and even more a new spin on Harley Quinn can be seen in this wonderful clip. It’s enough to make anyone feel like Daffy Duck in “The Great Duck Detective,” as you can practically set your watch to your pronunciation of all those holy names of infamy.
Admittedly, there are some very strong vibes reminiscent of of Batman: The Animated Series in the trailer for Batman: The Caped Crusader; and it’s for a pretty good reason. Producer Bruce Timm was involved in the previous series, and his influence is definitely felt alongside the other producer Batman’s director/co-writer, Matt Reeves.
As for The Bat himself, Hamish Linklater sounds like a lovely tribute to late Kevin Conroys incarnation of Batman. That choice makes the rest of the impressive cast that includes Minnie Driver, Jamie Chung and Christina Ricci; as well as cartoon voice legends John DiMaggio and Tom Kenny, even more of a catch.
However, Batman: The Caped Crusader seems to have buried the palatable lead with its evil. And no, I’m not just referring to former animated Batman voice artist Dietrich Bader who was brought in to play the role of Harvey Dent/Two-Face. It’s time to make some noise, because one of these villains comes with a dodgy background that could lead to a promising solution.
Onomatopoeia – The unfinished Batman villain
It’s somewhat fitting that the same series reinventing Bruce Timm’s Harley Quinn has the potential to complete Kevin Smithis unfinished Batman comic story. The mysterious figure you see above is known as Onomatopoeia, an adversary created by Smith in the 2008-2009 arc Batman: Cacophony, with the character continuing in the 2009-2010 book Batman: The Widening Gyre.
Unfortunately, and with one of the most infamous cliffhangers in modern comics history, the story’s planned third entry Batman: Bellicosity has not materialized. Originally slated for release in 2014, there has been no skin or hair in the next chapter.
Seeing Onomatopoeia appear in Batman: The Caped Crusader the trailer has given me hope that maybe, just maybe, we’ll see the conclusion of this story play out after all. Although anyone who knows that story and the fact that Robert Pattinson marked Mask of Phantasm influence on Batman, may be on the same mental path as I am; as this could prove to be yet another bittersweet reminder of why Bruce Wayne isn’t married.
While the end of Onomatopoeia’s arc doesn’t play out in this new series, there’s no shortage of complications to Batman’s life and everything he holds dear Batman: The Caped Crusader. With a more mature approach to storytelling, and an art style that addresses each Batman: The Animated Series ends, it’s a great time to be a fan of this iconic DC Comics character.
Batman: The Caped Crusader kicks off on August 1st, but not on the same bat streamer you’d expect. The citizens of Gotham who want to keep up with the titular titan of hustle must have one Prime Video subscription to stay in the know.
