The Star Wars franchise has been on a bit of a hiatus from the big screen but in the meantime fans have been blessed with a plethora of TV shows. The latest new offering from a galaxy far, far away to hit the small screen is coming Star Wars: The Skeleton Crew. The long-running production will feature mostly child leads, with Jude Law as their protector. Well, now the first trailer has arrived, and it gives it all away Amblin movie vibes as promisedand i love it. But I still have one big question.
From the jump, it’s clear in the trailer that our four leads are the young and precocious Wim, Fern, KB and Neel, who live on a sleepy planet that has yet to be named. The quartet face big choices regarding their future, but before they do, they stumble across what appears to be an ancient Jedi temple. But what’s more, they disintegrate a shuttle that sends them into space, setting off their adventure.
What I love about this trailer is that it gives off the airy and warm vibes that have historically been associated with Amblin films. Even the iconography, believe it or not, is similar to what moviegoers have seen and loved with these productions over the years. The children’s home planet even has a neighborhood that looks like one Star Wars-format version of a community from a movie that ET the alien or Back to the future. Frankly, I’m impressed with how series creators Jon Watts and Christopher Ford managed to mix this classic atmosphere with George Lucas‘ iconic franchise.
It’s also hard not to like the characters, even after only seeing a few of them here. They’re exactly the kind of badass team of youngsters you’d expect for this kind of show, and it’s great to see. Honestly, at this point it seems like the closest fans can get it long talked about Goonies continuation.
However, I still can’t help but wonder how this ties into the bigger picture Star Wars universe. It has previously been confirmed Skeleton Crew takes place in the same time pocket as series like The Mandalorian and Ahsoka. And with that, its plot threads would also converge with those notions Dave Filoni’s groundbreaking filmwhich will bring all the arcs of the series to a head. As exciting as SC is, at this point I just can’t see how these characters can be crossed with those from the other two aforementioned series and others. It just feels so far away from them geographically and tonally.
I guess I shouldn’t doubt Filoni and other EPs Jon Favreauhowever, because they probably have a plan here. It’s possible that what could bring these kids into the paths of Din Djarin, Ahsoka Tano and more is Jude Law’s Jod Na Nawood, a Jedi the kids cross paths with. Given the increasing threat of Grand Admiral Thrawn, Nawood may be aware or will become aware of what the remnants of the Galactic Empire are planning. And if so, the children may end up in the cross somehow. This is of course speculation, but until more is revealed, it’s all I can do fans at this point.
Still, regardless of the unknown variables, I’m eager to see more of the Amblin-like Skeleton Crew has to offer. As cool as it will be to see how it ties into the larger universe, let’s just hope it manages to be a fresh and compelling story on its own.
