Movie adaptations of video games have historically done poorly in theaters, but that has changed in recent years. After success for titles such as Sonic the Hedgehog (which streams with a Paramount+ subscription) and Detective Pikachua variety of upcoming video game movies was greenlit by studios. It includes A Minecraft movie, and the first trailer is a crazy mix of live-action and animation… although I’m distracted by Jason Momoas hair.
What we know about A Minecraft movie has been limited, which is what makes the first video shown above so exciting. Set on The Beatles’ “Magic Mystery Tour,” we see some of the action that looks straight out of the beloved video game series. But one thing that didn’t come from the source material is Momoa’s hair, complete with bangs.
Since this is only the first film, the details and plot details of the upcoming film remain a mystery for now. We see cast off A Minecraft movie looking completely amazed at the animated world they are in, so it seems like they come from the real word and are transported there. That is… except Jack Blackis Steve, who is the character players get to play as throughout the franchise.
After his performance as Bowser, it seems that Jack Black has found his own subgenre of video game movies. Because in addition to recording Steve Minecraft, Black also had a role in Borderlands. And that one Minecraft the film will blend animation and live-action in a unique way.
Other familiar faces in this short trailer for this video game movie include Orange is the new black and Master of Peace actress Danielle Brooks, as well Wednesdayis Emma Myers. However, as I write this story, Jack Black is the only actor whose character’s name has been shared with the public.
It should be fascinating to see how Minecraft games are brought to life on the big screen, given their wild popularity and distinctive visual style. The franchise is known for letting its players build anything they can dream of, so the possibilities seem endless. This first teaser showed the game-accurate image of the square franchise, which extends to castles, animals and trees.
Trying to put live-action characters in Minecraft franchise seems like an impossible task, but this limited material looks pretty good. And considering how many young fans Black has thanks to The Super Mario Bros. Filmit loos that his next video game adaptation could be a family affair that could be a big box office draw. I just have to wonder how many others will be as distracted by Momoa’s bangs as I am.
A Minecraft movie has a theatrical release on April 4. For now, check 2025 movie release date to plan your theater trips next year.
More to come…
