Every day we get closer to the final rounds 2024 movie schedulewith a few select delights waiting just around the bend. The upcoming A24 film Heretic is one of those movies to look forward to, and somehow this one Hugh Grant guided journey into holy terror is still something of a mystery.
In fact, the only thing that impressed me more than Grant’s awesomely creepy performance is the fact that we’ve seen three trailers for this movie, and I feel like we’re not even spoiled.
Heretic’s Secret Keeping Ability must be praised
In an age where you hear people say “The trailer gave away too much!” regularly, it feels like a blessing to have a well-received horror film remain a mystery this far. And believe me, what we know about Heretic is already enough to get our imaginations going.
Especially when Hugh Grant’s “Mr. Reed” is about to send young Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (Chloe East) through a journey of inner faith. Of course, that kind of undertaking normally involves some kind of personal conflict, at least in the more traditional kind of story where a person of faith has this very common personal crisis.
However, Heretic Writers/directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods have seemed to have taken that prospect and translated it into something far more horrific. As you can see through all three trailers, whatever that journey entails, and the end result, remains as cryptic as ever.
Much like everyone else best A24 movieswe all ask questions about what we are not seeing. In that spirit, I’d like to share a theory about where I was think the madness, then Heretic is on its way.
My best guess as to where Heretic is headed
With the limited knowledge at hand, I have to openly just wonder where the history of Heretic goes More so than any regular trailer, as again, we the audience seem to be as dark as Sisters Barnes and Paxton. However, I have a wild theory that has been sparked by the main thrust of the picture’s story.
Let’s just say it while this role seems to be falling apart Hugh Grant’s “orange role” streakit was with good purpose. Especially when the middle of Heretics the story is mr. Reed, a man presumably well-read in the ways of comparative religion, forcing our young Mormons to choose between “faith” and “disbelief.”
Through a homemade maze, and the potential help of some psychoactive drugs that sound like they can make a person feel pretty bad, the simple choice that simply has to be made will unfold. Sounds to me like a dash of cosmic horror is about to invade Heretics oh so secret borders.
I think the Barnes and Paxton sisters are about to get a look beyond the veil of our world, and what they see might just drive them to near madness. Which will ultimately force them to either find comfort in Belief, or live disillusioned with Disbelief…and continue Mr. Reed’s work.
I’m willing to risk being wrong, because it proves my point Heretics marketing has revealed almost nothing, and the journey to enlightenment is all the more enjoyable. This is just speculation, and I can’t wait to see if I’m right or wrong. This picture also got me hooked at the moment Hugh Grant proved himself to be a holy terror who could become one of the greats of the landscape upcoming horror movies.
Heretic It won’t be long before it reveals its secrets to us all, as the film has been pushed up to a November 8 theatrical release. And while we’re unsure when it’ll go to streaming, A24’s current deal allows Max subscription holders to enjoy the loot from their library have probably secured that fate.
But if you’ve decided to wait until you stream, good luck avoiding spoilers in the meantime. Regardless of the truth Heretic may turn out to be, it looks like we’ll be talking about those revelations for a while.
