The award winner is used to waiting for the end of each prize show to see the big movie categories awarded, but Saturday’s authors Guild Awards threw everyone for a loop by making the movie Awards into the first two categories at night in simultaneous ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York.
“Nickel Boys” won the first award at night, for best adapted script, and “Anora” won the second, for best original script. The prices led by the exhibitions because the BAFTA Awards take place in London on Sunday, with categories’ early placement that gave “Nickel Boys” author Ramell Ross and Joslyn Barnes and “Anora” author Sean Baker more time to come to London.
Thewrap will update the list of winners that they will be announced.
The script for “Jim Henson Idea Man” won in the final category for functional film for documentary functions.
In the TV categories, “The Penguin” won in the category with a limited series. “Shōgun” won the award for best new series. “The Great Lillian Hall” won for TV and streaming films.
In addition to the categories that cover the entire season of a series, WGA also gives awards for specific episodes of a series. The section “Bulletproof” by “Hacks” won the Episodic Comedy Award, while the “Anjin” section of “Shōgun” won the episodic drama.
“Nikki Glaser: One day you will die” won in the category comedy/variety.
In the categories for film films, eligibility for the Writers Guild Awards is limited to the script which was signed under the Guild’s smallest basic agreement or according to related agreements from affiliated international guilder. That rule made most of this year’s Oscar -nominated not entitled to the author’s Guild nominations, with the original scripts “The Brutalist”, “September 5” and “The Substance” and the adaptations “Conclave”, “Sing Sing” and “Emilia Pérez “All disqualified.
Despite the difference in justification, the WGA winner has in recent years won Oscar about two-thirds of the time in the adapted manuscript category and a little more than half of the time in the original script category.
“Anora” has now won three of the big Guild Awards, after taking The Producers Guild and Director Guild Awards last weekend. Of the 11 previous films that have won all these awards, 10 Oscar won for best picture. (The only one who was not “Brokeback Mountain” – but the movie it lost to, “Crash”, won in the original manuscript category at WGA while “Brokeback” won in the custom category.)
The last major guild ceremony, Screen Actors Guild Awards, will take place on Sunday 23 February.
The Writers Guild of America, West Ceremony took place at Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills and hosted by Joel Kim Booster, while WGA, East Ceremony took place at Edison Ballroom in New York City and hosted Roy Wood Jr.
At the WGAW ceremony, David Lynch will be greeted with a postum presentation of the Laurel Award for screenwriting, which he could accept personally before he died in January. In other honorary awards, Vince Gilligan will receive the Paddy Chayfsky Laurel Award for TV -Jusid performance and “Nickel Boys” writer Ramell Ross and Joslyn Barnes got Paul Selvin Award.
Wgae gives honorary awards to Scott Frank “Ian McLellan Hunter Award for Career Performance”, Bill Lawrence “The Herb Sargent Award for Comedy Excellence” and Kathy McGee “Richard B. Jablow Award for Devoted Service to Guild”.
