What are tabi nails?
“Tabi nails are inspired by the Japanese socks and popular shoes characterized by their signature split-toe design,” says nail artist Ramon Duran. “They have it, hoof -like toe that is super recognized in the fashion world.”
They are not your run-of-the-mill nail art. “It is very avant-garde, very niche and definitely a design for the more fashion-forward client who loves such references.”
However, Tabi nails are not for everyone – your nail length records in whether this trend will work for you or not. “Tabi nails look best on medium length, rounded (or) oval nails because you need the extra space for the design to really come through. You can technically make them shorter, but the look feels more raised with a little length.”
How to get tabi nails

If you want to add more length so you have more space to play, “I would start with rounded medium -length tips, like OPI Gelevate Soft Gel Tips ($ 33) in the round form, says Duran. He then suggests that he goes in with a naked or clean base to mimic the natural nail bed.
You can paint on the “shoe” part with any color, but Duran suggests using a sharp white one as Opi gelcolor in alpine snow ($ 21). When it is cured, he says that you can take a needle on your nail drill and gently cut out a small split at the tip, giving it the signature tabi look. “Then I seal everything with a top coat to make sure the edges are smooth and clean.”
