Broadway’s big night is over us, and there is an abundance of hot races on Telecast: Will the best actress in a musical to go to Nicole Scherzinger in “Sunset Boulevard” or Audra McDonald in “Gypsy”, which makes a record on a record number victory for the latter? Will Bob Odenkirk experience Tony Glory after switching for AMC’s “Better Call Saul” for several years at Emmys? Will Patti Lupone make a surprised entrance San’s comments?
Tony’s ceremony is broadcast live on CBS from 20 to 23 et., With streaming available via Paramount+. Nominated Darren Criss (“Maybe Happy Ending”) will join Tony and Grammy winner Renée Elise Goldsberry to host “The Tony Awards: Act One”, a live-pre-show, streaming free on Pluto TV from 18.00-8 et.
In early awards, both “Buena Vista Social Club” and “Stranger Things: The First Shadow” won overall with 3 each; “Maybe Happy Ending” has earned two, including the best book in a musical. Costume designer Paul Tazewell won to dress “Dead becomes her”, making him one of the few people in history to win an Oscar (for “Wicked”) and a Tony in the same year. (Tazewell also has a former Tony to dress “Hamilton.”)
Among the most expected performances of the ceremony will be the 10th anniversary reunion of the original role of “Hamilton”, which will again join for a celebration of the international Behoth, and will include all the principals, including LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA, LESLIE ODOM JR. Winner named Ariana Debose (that hosted the last three Tony Awards).
The musicians from “Buena Vista Social Club” will have a special Tony, as will the effects of “Stranger Things: The First Shadow.” Harvey Fiertein will receive the 2025 Special Tony Award for life span in the theater, while Tony-winning actor Celia Keenan-Bolger (“Killing a Mockingbird”) will receive 2025 Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award for his extensive advocate work.
