There are three main Types of diabetes: Type 1, type 2 and pregnancy diabetes (although we also hear more about Type 1.5 -Diabetes). In people without diabetes, food is converted into glucose (sugar). This glucose is then released into the bloodstream, which causes the blood sugar to rise, which then urges the pancreas to release insulin. This insulin then moves the glucose into the cells and gives energy to the rest of the body. However, in people with diabetes, this process is disturbed.
In type 1 -diabetes make pancreas small or no insulin, per Mayo Clinic. In type 2 diabetes, the body does not use insulin correctly, which leads to high blood sugar. Pregnancy diabetes is diagnosed during pregnancy and involves inability to process sugar (probably due to hormonal changes). And finally type 1.5 diabetes – even known as Latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (barn) – is when the pancreas gradually stops making insulin over time due to damage from another autoimmune process.
